Introduction to Tai O Fishing Village (大澳渔村) Tai O Fishing Village is located on the west coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. The fishing village is one of the few remaining traditional fishing villages in Hong Kong. It has been recorded that the Tai O Fishing Village has been around since the Ming Dynasty when fisherman began anchoring their boats in the small water channels between Tai O Island and Lantau Island. One of the most attractive views of the fishing village is the stilt houses which still remain. The village remains a popular tourist attraction to foreigners who are fascinated by the local life of the native fisherman families. Strolling through Tai O Fishing Village is much more authentic than the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong. The wooden walkways that connect the residencies and neighborhoods together and providing land access to the local residents is unique. A big highlight of Tai O Village is the Pink Dolphins that are often spotted near the area. There are boat tours available for tourists who want to get up close and the see the dolphins. The boat tours set out from the harbor next to the bus terminus. The speed boats will then take you for a spin around the area where you can see the amazing dolphins in action. Wandering around the village you will find that there are many seafood and dried seafood stores. Freshly caught seafood are sold every day and there are also some fish left to dry in the sun along with salted duck egg yolks, all of which are famous produces of Tai O Fishing Village. As for delicious snacks there are many traditional like fish balls, deep fried seafood and barbequed shellfish. There are also some western cafés available if you prefer to have coffee and cake. |
