Introduction to Idkah Mosque (艾提尕尔清真寺) Located in the west of the Idkah square, Kashgar city, covering an area of 25.22 acres, Idkah Mosque is not only the largest mosque in Xinjiang, but also one of the largest mosques in China. The buildings are all built in traditional ethnic and religious Islamic style. Idkah Mosque is divided into seven parts, the main sights includes the main hall, outside hall, courtyard, Hall of Prayer, gate tower and other structures. The original Mosque was built in 1442 by Saksiz Mirza the ruler of Kashgar. It was later expanded for the last time in 1873 by Yakup Bag, a powerful ruler of Kashgar. The mosque remained the center of religious activity in Kashgar with many pilgrims that come to worship at the mosque and many religious activities right outside the temple. Every Friday afternoon 10,000 Muslims gather here to worship. |
