Tibet is a autonomous region for Tibetan people. It lies in the southwest border of China and is located in the southwest of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It borders Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region to the north, province of Qinghai to the northeast, Sichuan to the east and Yunnan to the southeast. Also it shares a border with Myanmar, India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal and Kashmir. It covers an area of 1,200,000 square kilometers. Lhasa is the capital city for Tibet.

Geography and climate

Tibet is called "Roof of the World" as lies in the magnificent Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with an average elevation over 4,000 meters. Generally terrain of Tibet is divided into three natural regions, the northern part is the Northern Tibetan Plateau which is located between huge mountains of Kunlun, Tanglha, Gangdise and Nyenchen Tanglha; the southern Tibet valley between the Gangdise Mountains and the Himalaya where the Yarlung Zangbo River and its tributaries running through; and the eastern high mountains and valley area which belongs to a part of the great Hengduan Mountains. Terrain of Tibet is so complex that except plateau, mountains, valleys and rivers, there are landforms of glaciers, aeolian, volcanoes and karst, and numerous lakes.

Tibet has a unique plateau climate which is characterized by thin air, low pressure, less oxygen, strong ultraviolet radiation, long sunshine duration, low temperature and large temperature difference between day and night.


Although there are ethnic groups like Han, Hui, Qiang, Monpas and Lhobas inhabited in Tibet, Tibet has been a traditional homeland of the Tibetan people for a long history. Hence culture in Tibet is dominated by the Tibetan culture. Among the Tibetan people, religion plays a great role in their lives and culture. There is
the mainstream religion of Tibetan Buddhism in Tibet, also Islam and Christianity in Tibet. Architectures in Tibet are other representatives of Tibetan culture, in addition to its religious music.
