Shanxi Province, short for Jin, is located in the west of Taihang Mountain and situated in ten middle of the Yellow River and the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau. It neighbors Hebei to the east, Henan to the south, Shaanxi to the west, and Inner Mongolia to the north. The province has a land area of 156,000 square kilometers with Taiyuan serving as the capital city.

Geography and climate

Terrain in Shanxi is high in the northeast declining to the low southwest with the diversified terrain of plateau, hills, highlands, plains and rivers. Shanxi is dominated by mountains of Taihang and Luliang in the east and the west, and a series of valleys in the central parts where the Fen River running through.

Shanxi has a temperate continental monsoon climate which is dry and cold in winters, warm and humid in summers.


Shanxi is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization, and is one of the main representatives of the Yellow River culture. It has rich cultural heritages and relics. Shanxi merchant culture originated from Shanxi is quite popular in China in ancient and modern times. Also the Shanxi Opera, or called Jinju, is a local form of Chinese opera that is popularized with the traveling of Shanxi merchants.


Tourism in Shanxi is mainly focused on rich cultural sites endowed from its long history. Attractions of this category are Yungang Grottoes in Datong city, the Ancient City of Pingyao, the Wooden Pagoda of Yingxian County, the remote Shuanglin Temple and Jinci Temple. And there are of course natural beautiful sceneryies to see in Shanxi, famous ones like the Mount Wutai, Mount Hengshan and Hukou Waterfalls.
